How I became a website designer
Early career
Shortly after joining Ware Anthony Rust in a marketing exec role in 1997, I was part of the team that established our first 'new media' department, a pioneering step into the digital space at the time. By 2001, this initiative had grown into the 'interactive' department, reflecting the evolution of technology and the increasing demand for cutting-edge web and digital solutions tailored to our clients' needs.
During my time at Ware Anthony Rust, I developed a deep interest in website design, initially working on the periphery of projects that involved crafting some of the agency's first websites. I had the privilege of contributing to digital milestones for well-known brands such as Plastikote, Multiyork, Titleist and FootJoy. These early experiences sparked my fascination with blending creativity and technology, as I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a well-designed digital presence in enhancing brand identity and engaging audiences. This exposure laid the foundation for my passion for web design and development.
My first sites
I fondly recall the early days of my journey into freelance website design, where I delivered my first projects using Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver—two tools that were at the cutting edge of web development at the time. Notable among these were Cambridge United's members website, Lighting Sensations, where I helped showcase their innovative lighting products and helped transition from an electrical installation firm to a lighting consultancy; and Thistle Brides, where the website played a pivotal role in generating new leads.
These early successes not only honed my technical and creative skills but also deepened my appreciation for crafting bespoke digital solutions that resonated with clients and their audiences.
Professional services website design
After leaving Ware Anthony Rust in 2007, I took the exciting step of establishing my own little website design business, Ideas by Eden (IBE). This venture allowed me to channel my passion for design and technology into creating tailored digital solutions for a wide range of clients. In the early days, I focused on designing websites for professional service organisations, helping them establish a strong online presence that effectively communicated their brand and engaged their audiences.
I also ventured into the world of e-commerce website design, developing website designs that facilitated seamless online shopping experiences. These projects involved designing user-friendly interfaces, and ensuring an optimal balance between aesthetics and functionality. Over time, Ideas by Eden grew into a trusted name for delivering creative, impactful web solutions, and this period laid the groundwork for my evolution as a designer dedicated to helping businesses thrive in the digital age.
Charity website design
I had the privilege of working on a significant number of charity website projects, collaborating with several high-profile local organisations. These projects were incredibly rewarding, as they allowed me to combine my design expertise with a passion for supporting causes that made a real difference in the community.
By creating engaging and user-friendly websites, I was able to help these charities amplify their missions, increase awareness, and connect with supporters and donors more effectively. Each project was a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful initiatives, ensuring their digital presence reflected their values and inspired action.

Corporate website design
I've had the opportunity to work with a handful of global corporate clients, including Xaar, my first PLC client, marking a significant milestone in my career. Collaborating with a company of such stature was both a challenge and a privilege, as it required a deep understanding of corporate branding, clear communication of complex technologies, and alignment with stakeholder expectations.
Designing for corporate clients like Xaar involved creating sleek, professional websites that not only showcased their expertise but also reflected their reputation and authority within their industries. These projects often required developing user-friendly navigation for a diverse audience—ranging from potential investors and partners to clients and employees—while ensuring compliance with corporate guidelines and industry standards.
Beyond Xaar, my corporate website design work extended to other organisations across various sectors, helping them establish a strong digital presence that effectively communicated their mission, services, and achievements. These experiences deepened my understanding of how to design for scale and professionalism, crafting solutions that balanced visual appeal with functionality and strategic messaging.
